Auntie-Types

Dear Readers,

I'm busy writing The Savvy Auntie Guide to Life (HarperCollins  / Harper Studio) and from time to time, I'll be asking for your comments and ideas. After all, this book is just an extension of the Savvy Auntie community and I want you to be a part of it.

Right now I'm thinking about different Auntie-Types. I know you're all Savvy Aunties, but aunts are as diverse as any other group.  How would you define your Auntie-Type? From Aunties by Relation (ABR) to Aunties by Choice (ABC) to Mommy Aunties (aunts who are also moms) to Aunties-In-Law (married to their uncle), Long Distance Aunties (LDA), Gay Aunties (lesbian aunties and gay uncles),  Auntie Mame types, Eco-Aunties, etc... It begs the question:

WHAT TYPE OF AUNTIE ARE YOU?

Please use the comments section below to share how you'd define your Auntie-Type. I want to make sure I include as many Auntie-Types in the book as possible so all readers feel connected to the Savvy Auntie Community - so please don't be shy to share how you'd describe yourself.

Please include an Auntie Type name and definition. If you are Anonymous, please include your initials and state/province, if you don't mind. I can't WAIT to hear from you, Aunties!!

XOXO,

Auntie Melanie

I'm both and ABC (to my friends' kids) and an Auntie-In-Law to my husband's nieces and nephews and I love both roles!

I'm an ABR, ABC, Auntie-in-law (also fall into the category of LDA here as my partner is Canadian and we live in Australia with his nieces and nephew living in Canada)As much as I adore my nephews, I can honestly say that being an Auntie by Choice to my friends kids was as special as being an Auntie to my sister's kids. I think it's more about the relationships you develop with the child and the relationship that you have with their mother that makes being an Auntie so special.

I come from a large family and adore my nieces and nephews (close to 50 at last count!) and am both an ABR and an LDA. And of course I'm also an ABC 🙂

ABR and AIL as well as ABCD. ABCD – Aunt, By Choice Dedicated since I don't have any of my own kids and my nieces and nephews are such a huge part of my legacy.

Auntie by relation, Auntie by choice. Long distance Auntie, Traveling Auntie

Traveling Auntie: I work for an online trade publication which gives me complete mobility and freedom. I can work from anywhere with a mobile hotspot. A cup of coffee and free wifi and I'm a happy auntie. [Smile] Combine that with my love for suitcases and airports and you'll rarely find me at home in Nashville. You'll most likely find me with friends in NYC, Chicago, L.A., Atlanta, Portland, Charleston or with my nieces in Grand Rapids. One of my favorite parts about my traveling is sending my nieces postcards and collecting special presents from the places I visit. My 3yo niece's favorite stuffed animal is the doggy I bought her in NYC and I got the girls matching pink princess t-shirts in San Francisco: Big Sister & Lil Sister. Sigh. I love those girls.

Auntie-as-Godmother, Auntie-by-Choice to my friend's two kids and I'd also say I have shades of Auntie Mame. (Eccentric is probably a polite euphemism at this point!)

Auntie by Godmother (Not Related) Auntie by marriage (although I would not distinguish this from relation)Auntie by relation ( my cousin's kids – I am an only child but my cousins and I have always treated each other as brother and sister) BTW had a full weekend of being a Fairy Godmother and Auntie! I'm the CRAZY AUNTIE!!! (in fact even though we're not Spanish, my niece and nephew call me “Tia Loca.” I am the auntie that gets silly and crazy and wild with them. I give them wedgies, tell them silly jokes and let them make a mess. I try to turn everything into a game, but my favourite job is making them each feel like they are the most important people on the planet to me.
