The childless woman - a monster

Caroline Hainer on how women who are not mothers are depicted on film

Hollywood is not kind to the childless woman. In the Avengers : Age of Ultron collects a bunch of superheroes to save the world once again. One of them is the timid researcher Dr Banner ( Mark Ruffalo ) who becomes the green muscle bundle Hulk when he is angry. For a moment with the film's only female superhero Black Widow ( Scarlett Johansson ) he regrets and says he is a monster, a freak. But Black Widow contradicts telling her she can't have children. She trumps with "Do you still think you are the only monster in the group?".
